It is the plural of the obsolete spelling of nigh, ie NYE, and the clue becomes trite! N(ot) first then YES! I had more problems with the quotation than populating the grid. Haven't got ODQ.
Hi DocHH. Likewise. I have one answer to go, but have searched fruitlessly for quotation as I don't have the ODQ either. A hint as to where look would be appreciated.
Hello Christiana
I assumed the quotation started in square 2, made other assumptions on the square between 5&6, between 6&7 and the unchecked squares at the corner and the squares unchecked round to the square at the end of 40ac. I then Googled the author plus those words and voila!
Quotation is by a German philosopher ( Arthur Sch......... ) and I'm sure you could find it by looking on the web. First word needed is the title of the puzzle.
B - Merry Christmas to all EV solvers who use this site --- I hope you all have the sort of Christmas which you you wish yourselves. I've asked Father Christmas for a few more grey cells ( to help solve this every week ) and a lot fewer grey hairs ( resulting from trying to solve it each week!! )
Thanks DocHH, I had the answer but wasn't sure.....
I struggled to find the quotation until I found ODQ in google books.
I agree with Rollo, if this week wasn't easy I wouldn't have finished it.
Well, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, prosperous (despite the current financial crisis) 2009. I am sure DevaDolly would have expressed pleasure at seeing us "nattering and chattering" again this week! As DD said last week, first up starts the EV thread, no matter how far progressed!!
Ciao
Thanks Doc and Novalis. Sorry for late response but was travelling all day today from Portugal to the Isle of Man. I knew who the quotation was by and had worked out it contained the titleword, and googled a lot, but made the mistake of thinking the first word would start in the left hand corner and had guessed ncorrectly it would be ll. Havent yet searched again but feel more confident of finding it now. A merry Christmas and happy new year to all.
Oh hello everybody! Always assuming that this is read so far along the line - A belated Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year to all.
Couldn't find any posts when I looked before Christmas and then events overtook and of course, not having posted I didn't get any alerts. Just assumed that as it was an easy one you all had it completed and in the post by 11.30am!
After all that my Seven mag last Sunday seemed to have some pages missing, ie. NO EV, what is the ST up to I ask?
Retrospectively, yes it was great to see all the chattering and nattering and hopefully we should all be restored to full service this Sunday ....................first up starts us all off in Crosswords!
Hello Devadolly
Better late than never! You were not alone in missing EV last sunday, it just wasn't in Seven. I searched high and low in the paper in vain for an apology for absence! Let's hope normal service is resumed this weekend.
